![]() ![]() The diameter changes through the variation in distance between the two halves of the pulley. Unlike the conventional centrifugal CVT using a rubber belt, the SECVT adjusts the CVT ratio by varying the drive-pulley diameter with an electric actuator motor. The variation in distance between the left and right disc of the pulley changes in turn the diameter of the pulley. How Does a Conventional Continuously Variable Transmission Work?īurgman 650: Suzuki Electrically-controlled Pulley, a part of the SECVT. Before I describe the genious in the SECVT, let me quickly explore how a conventional continuously variable transmission works. These engineers refined an already-efficient CVT system even further, by integrating electronic controls, of both, engine and transmission. The brains behind this piece of engineering - which makes the Burgman 650 Executive such a pleasure to ride - are Kazutoshi Ohashi, who led the development of the SECVT control systems in the Motorcycle Engineering Design Department III, Group I at the Miyakoda Research and Development Centre, and his colleague Shinobu Tsutsumikoshi. Suzuki's SECVT seems to do all that, and more. Transmissions transmit engine power to driving wheels and adjust output to motoring conditions, while performance must also be fuel-efficient and environmentally responsible. It is also the world's first two-wheel vehicle to feature the Suzuki Electrically-controlled Continuously Variable Transmission (SECVT). The Burgman 650 is Suzuki's largest-displacement-engine scooter. I am not even certain, whether the word fantastic accurately describes this engineering marvel. This SECVT performed, and is still performing, flawlessly! I simply love it.īurgman 650: Suzuki Electrically-controlled Continuously Variable Transmission (SECVT) The SECVT endured the longest stretch of straight road (146 km) in Australia, and the worst roads imaginable for a scooter, such as hundeds of kilometres of endless gravel roads and creek beds - with and without water in it. I rode through some of Australia's toughest desert roads roads, no sane person would take this scooter there I did, and I am proud I did! I rode it up and down the Great Dividing Range, from sea level to 1,500 metres AMSL in 2 hours, and down again. I have tested the SECVT on many of my motorcycle journeys, in and Around Australia, over 13 hours of straight riding, and 1,300 km only quickly stopping for fuel. How Do I Know the SECVT is a Great Transmission? After riding the Burgman for 22 months and 60,000 km, I felt it was time to put the praise out to the world. I am so pleased with the performance of my Burgman 650 Executive, which is largely a result of the automatic transmission this maxi-scooter employs. Suzuki Electrically-controlled Continuously Variable Transmission (SECVT). Summary: The Burgman 650 Executive has a fantastic, computer-controlled automatic transmission, with rider-selectable performance modes a.k.a. Burgman 650: Automatic Transmission (SECVT) ![]()
